If so, you are not the only one.\u00a0 Researchers found that young adults concentrated an average of five &#8211; six minutes before being distracted by technology (Rosen, Carrier, &amp; Cheever, 2013).<\/p>\n<p>Why does this statistic matter?\u00a0 Why should you care about the average time young adults in a research project focused before checking social media?\u00a0 These statistics are important because researchers (Feng, Wong, Wong, &amp; Hossain, 2019; Junco, 2012; Rosen, Carrier, &amp; Cheever, 2013) also found a negative correlation between the amount of distractions and academic performance.\u00a0 This means that the more distracted you are while studying, the more likely that you will earn lower grades.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you see research-backed evidence that distracted learning is detrimental to your academic performance, what can you do?\u00a0 You can create a strategic approach to studying and improve your grades (Chen, Chavez, &amp; Gunderson, 2017).\u00a0 What strategies can you employ to improve your studying?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Consider the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Remove the distractions. <\/strong>What does this mean exactly?\u00a0 Put your phone on silent and in your backpack.\u00a0 Turn off the television.\u00a0 Study in a quiet room.\u00a0 Find a place where you can truly focus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Take a break.<\/strong> Once you have settled into a quiet place, focus on your course materials for 15-20 minutes and then allow yourself a quick break to check back in with social media, texts, etc. \u00a0Reward your focused learning with something you enjoy doing. \u00a0By alternating a study session with a social media check-in, you can take the time to focus on your schoolwork without compromising your social media interests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Set goals. <\/strong>Before you sit down for a study session, think about what you would like to accomplish. Be specific.\u00a0 Would you like to memorize 30 definitions?\u00a0 Would you like to apply a mathematical formula successfully in 10 practice problems?\u00a0 Set specific, measurable goals for your studying and then use your time to work toward those goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Be mindful. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>As you study, be mindful of how you are feeling.\u00a0 Would your learning improve if you took a quick walk?\u00a0 Are you staying hydrated?\u00a0 Are you taking the time to eat a healthy meal?\u00a0 Take care of yourself as you study to maintain your focus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Set a schedule. <\/strong>Make the time to study.\u00a0 Create a schedule for yourself and stick to it.\u00a0 Look at your calendar and schedule time each day for your academics.\u00a0 Then, follow this schedule.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Break larger projects into smaller tasks. <\/strong>It can often be overwhelming to begin working on a large project.\u00a0 If you have a big project, break the project into achievable, smaller tasks.\u00a0 It is easier to stay focused on smaller tasks than one bigger, overwhelming project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use your resources. <\/strong>If you are struggling with your academics, use the resources available to you. If you are having difficulty writing a paper, use the Writing Center.\u00a0 If you are having trouble with your math homework, talk with a math tutor.\u00a0 When you are struggling academically, it is often easy to get distracted.\u00a0 However, if you use the resources available to you, it will be easier to focus on the task at hand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reward yourself. <\/strong>Studying is hard.\u00a0 College courses are difficult.\u00a0 Learning many of these concepts can be challenging.\u00a0 After you\u2019ve accomplished your goals for the day, reward yourself. \u00a0Spend some time doing what you enjoy so that you are ready to study again during your next scheduled study session.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThe above strategies and techniques may help you to stay focused on your learning.\u00a0 By employing specific study strategies, you may the learn the material and improve your grades.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>References<\/p>\n<p>Chen, P., Chavez, O., Ong, D., &amp; Gunderson, B.
