I am a pretty competitive person by nature. It does not mean I am good\u00a0at\u00a0everything I enjoy, but it definitely means I love watching a good match. Even though I am not in the Entrepreneurship E-Commerce class\u2014or an Entrepreneurship major at all\u00a0for that matter\u2014I have heard and learned a lot about it through my friends who are currently taking it. And the competition\u00a0bit\u00a0really piqued my interest. Over the course of a semester, the class\u00a0has\u00a0students form teams\u00a0to\u00a0start businesses and compete in selling products that ultimately support a cause of their choice.\u00a0They are responsible for delegating duties\u2014assigning chief executive, financial, and technical officers among other things\u2014and they get to pull things together on their own.<\/p>\n
Mended Sock Company is\u00a0just one of the many companies that\u00a0has\u00a0come out of the class, Sophia Stangebye and Caroline Parker being my two claims to fame.\u00a0Mended Sock Co.\u00a0ties into the organization\u00a0it\u00a0supports,\u00a0A21,\u00a0and its mission to mend the lives of individuals who have been affected by human trafficking. Caroline explained that\u00a0A21 organizes\u00a0walks for freedom across the world, and Sophia added that individuals who walk dress in all black and are silent\u2014but why\u00a0not\u00a0wear comfortable socks during these walks, she adds,\u00a0that\u00a0also\u00a0support the A21 mission.<\/p>\n
Despite\u00a0the\u00a0seemingly obscure class name, E-commerce is just a shortened\u00a0version of electronic\u00a0commerce\u2014the\u00a0idea of\u00a0commercial transactions\u00a0conducted\u00a0over the internet.\u00a0The\u00a0course description\u00a0describes\u00a0the\u00a0class\u00a0as\u00a0focusing\u00a0on\u00a0\u201ce-commerce strategy, target market,\u00a0analysis, search engine optimization, mobile commerce, social commerce, integrated marketing,\u00a0[and]\u00a0web\u00a0usability\u201d among other things; by \u201cworking with an external client,\u201d students have the opportunity to explore these subjects through their own exploration of such \u201cpractical applications in the marketplace.\u201d\u00a0Though each team member takes on a different position, the goal of the class is to\u00a0master the responsibilities of\u00a0be each role and ultimately run an online business on your own.<\/p>\n
Despite emphasis on\u00a0eventually\u00a0graduating to\u00a0individual\u00a0independence, the unique set of talents\u00a0that\u00a0each girl contributes to this team\u00a0really\u00a0allows their business to excel.\u00a0They are open in collaboration, free from concerns\u00a0about\u00a0groupthink or peer pressure and conformity. Instead\u00a0they can focus on what is best for the business.\u00a0Mended Sock Co.\u2019s passion for their mission and belief in their product is really attractive\u2014and not only to me. The\u00a0Dressember\u00a0Foundation, another organization that aims to stop human trafficking,\u00a0recently reached\u00a0out to Mended Sock Co.\u00a0and plans on featuring them on Instagram next week\u2014a\u00a0spotlight\u00a0that has\u00a0huge potential to both raise sales and thus support the mission but also to propel these girls\u00a0forward\u00a0into achieving their goals, supporting their mission, and feeding their passion. The fact that\u00a0E-Commerce class has given\u00a0them\u00a0the opportunity to\u00a0do this\u2014and to see them have such success with it\u2014is truly inspiring.<\/p>\n
So it is time for the plug (just kidding, this was not the\u00a0main\u00a0point. But hey\u2026).\u00a0Not only are\u00a0Mended Sock Co.\u2019s\u00a0socks\u00a0super comfortable and perfect for Grove City winters, but they\u2019re also very\u00a0reasonably priced\u2014only\u00a0$8 a pair. The style is simple, delicate, and classy,\u00a0but more than this,\u00a0every dollar\u00a0does go\u00a0to benefit the\u00a0A21 project.\u00a0In their efforts to gain entrepreneurship experience they are also serving a greater cause, one outside themselves, and allowing buyers to get in on it as well.
